Group portrait of the Lowell Baseball Club of Boston, 1865
Description:
In this group studio portrait of nine members of the Lowell Baseball Club of Boston, some of the players sit and some stand. The image is set against a background with architectural elements. Several players hold bats and caps. In the middle of the group, ball is displayed in a case set on a table. In 1861, John A. Lowell, an engraver, formed the team with students from different secondary schools in Boston. They were known as one of the better teams in New England. John A. Lowell may be the player in the center of the image, standing with his arm resting on a seated player.
