The myriad of illustrations in Aale explores various types of eels. Commissioned by naturalist Lorenz Oken as plate 47 of Allgemeine Naturgeschichte für alle Stände, Aale was drawn and engraved by Johann Conrad Susemihl between 1839 and 1841. To provide as much accuracy as possible, the print details eleven varieties of eel alongside three alternate anatomical views, or fourteen figures in all. Susemihl captures the sinuous forms of each eel, weaving the figures around each other in a dynamic composition. Susemihl's intricate hatch and stipple marks endow each eel with volume, while translucent watercolors mimic the glossy sheens of marine creatures.
