Boston Elevated Railway Company Poster Collection

or
Boston Elevated Railway Company incorporated in 1894 by authorization of the Massachusetts Legislature to provide mass transit via elevated railway in the Boston area. In addition to the elevated railways, Boston Elevated Railway Company also operated trams, streetcars, subways, and eventually bus lines.

Boston Elevated Railway Company produced these 23 printed posters encouraging ridership on their bus, elevated railway, streetcar, and subway lines. Eight of the posters were created for Boston Elevated Railway Company by Eastern Advertising Company. Some posters advertise sights to see in Boston and nearby Massachusetts and the routes that could be used to reach those locations. Other posters show "modern" buses, railcars, streetcars, and subway cars in service at the time, alongside their historical precedents. In 1947, Boston Elevated Railway Company was bought by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and became part of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, a predecessor of today's Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

Critical funding to support long-term preservation of and enhanced public access to Boston Public Library collections, including this one, was provided by the Associates of the Boston Public Library.
