Civil War Personal Papers and Currency

This small collection consists of five Civil War items unrelated to each other. Two items, the diaries, have been digitized. These diaries belonged to Edward E. Andrus (1820-1897) and Adoniram E. Vining (1841-?). Andrus served in Company H, 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as a Private. He enlisted on 26 Jun 1861 shortly after the regiment was formed in Boston. His diary covers October 21 through December 31, 1861. Vining enlisted in 1862 and served in Company F, First Artillery, First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. At the Battle of Jerusalem Plank Road or First Battle of Weldon Railroad on June 22, 1864, Private Vining was among 185 men captured. In total, approximately 1200 men were captured. For about a month, they traveled from Petersburg to Richmond, Danville Prison, Greensboro, and Augusta, arriving at Andersonville Prison on July 12. Vining survived Andersonville and was released on December 31, 1864.
