The City of Newton owns a wealth of historic materials that speak to the community's social, cultural, and governmental past. These materials reflect the civic life of and provide insight into Newton from the 19th through the early 20th century, a time when Newton was transforming from agriculture to industry and becoming a suburban Boston residential community. Presented here are photographs taken by the Programs and Communications Office (formerly the Public Relations Department) of the library's events and programs for its newsletter and various publicity needs. This collection covers Children's Room programs (storytelling, crafts, polyhedron project, Girl Scouts, Halloween party, Teddy Bear Picnic, Children's Book Bash), volunteers in the Technical Services Department, volunteers doing book delivery to homebound, book sale, Young Adult workshops, Career Night and workshop, Boston College theatre performance in the library auditorium, MBLC (Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners) award presentation, computer classes in the ITTC, views of the 330 Homer Street library under construction in 1990 and the finished atrium, and flowers presented to the last patron at the 414 Centre Street library in July 1991.
