The Appleton Family Photo Album Collection

or
Appleton Farms, located in Hamilton and Ipswich Massachusetts, is the oldest continuously operating farm in America. Established in 1636 by Samuel Appleton, the farm is among the most influential in America’s agricultural history. The Appleton Family Papers document the evolution of New England agricultural economics, social history, law, military service, animal husbandry, farming practices, education, women’s history, and more. The collection includes more than 70 photo albums, created between the 1880s and the 1990s, which detail the activities and evolution of the family and their farm. The two albums in this set include photographs taken between 1930 and 1989, and reflect the lives of the farm’s last heir and resident, Francis Randall Appleton, Jr. (1885-1974), and his wife, Joan Egleston Appleton (1912-2006).
