The Bill Lane Photograph Collection is comprised of over 18,000 black and white 35mm negatives that were taken between 1964 and 2000. Lane photographed Newburyport and the surrounding towns, documenting its people, local events, restaurants, nightclubs, businesses, schools, buildings, and landmarks, as well as the Merrimack River and Plum Island. Included are some aerial views. The bulk of the photographs were taken between the late 1960s and early 1980s, chronicling Newburyport's urban renewal period.
Bill Lane was born in 1940 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, grew up in the neighboring town of West Newbury, and graduated from Newburyport High School in 1958. His photography career began in 1959 during his time with the U.S. Air Force, when he served as a ground-based photographer in Germany. For 21 years, he worked as a photographer for the Newburyport Daily News and later taught classes in photography at the Governor's Academy in Newbury. His passion for the sea and sailing resulted in a substantial collection of marine photography. He currently lives, teaches, and freelances in North Hampton, New Hampshire.
