The Boston-based radical abolitionist newspaper The Liberator was published weekly from January 1, 1831 to December 29, 1865. The Liberator was founded and published by William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp and was a leading vehicle for unrelenting advocacy of the abolitionist cause and for the immediate and total emancipation of all enslaved persons in the United States.

The Boston Public Library copy of The Liberator was Garrison’s own and served also as the copy of record at The Liberator offices. It is a complete run of the newspaper, though the October 29, 1841 issue, missing from the original copy, was added to the set posthumously by Garrison’s son, Francis.

Critical funding to support long-term preservation of and enhanced public access to Boston Public Library collections, including this one, was provided by the Associates of the Boston Public Library.
