Edmund L. Mitchell Collection

or
Edmund L. Mitchell (1905-1981) was an amateur photographer active in Somerville's Recreation Camera Club. After serving in the military during World War II, Mitchell eventually started a career as a teacher at Somerville Southern Junior High School in 1953. His photographs suggest that he taught shop in his early years as a teacher.

As many amateur photographers did during this era, Mitchell photographed using color 35mm positive slide film. While the majority of his photographs were taken in the Greater Boston area, Mitchell also traveled extensively in the United States and Europe and he documented these trips as well. The acquisition of Edmund L. Mitchell's photographs represents a continuation of the BPL's mission to collect and preserve the work of gifted amateur photographers.

The Edmund L. Mitchell Collection is the gift of Richard J. S. and Kellie O. Gutman.

Critical funding to support long-term preservation of and enhanced public access to Boston Public Library collections, including this one, was provided by the Associates of the Boston Public Library.
