Harold Stephen Bucklin was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on November 4, 1886. He earned an undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1910, a Master of Arts degree in 1915 from the New York School of Social Work, and his Ph.D. in 1918. He served as instructor and professor of sociology at Brown University from 1915 until his retirement in 1951. Bucklin focused his work and publications on social problems, surveys, and social legislation. He was involved with numerous social Rhode Island organizations, the Americanization Commission, the Children's Law Commission, and the Juvenile Court Commission. Bucklin died on September 29, 1967, while visiting his daughter in Ohio.

In 1923, Bucklin served as Visiting Professor of Sociology at Shanghai College. It was during this visit that he directed a social settlement center and survey of a nearby Chinese village. Bucklin used a Graflex camera to capture his experiences in China. This digital collection consists of over 750 of these photographs. The photographs were arranged into three albums with captions and accompanied by over 200 supplemental postcards documenting the trip.
